Alex Irene is a Welsh singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist living in London. His music pairs finely-wrought lyrical intimacy with inventive, expansive arrangements that straddle an open border between lush classicism and DIY experimentation.

The first Alex Irene recording, Cariad, appeared online in 2023: a playful collection of lo-fi essays on love, distance and commitment, all recorded on a mobile phone. Studio debut Two followed in 2025, matching Irene’s continued reflections on the relations of people to one another with an expanded confidence in form and palette. In my heart there is a beating engine, a double-disc love letter to the life, history and spirit of South Wales, is forthcoming on Joy of Life International in autumn 2026.

As an instrumentalist, Irene has appeared live and on record with artists including Plainmoor, Antony Macassus, David John Morris (Red River Dialect) and Dana Gavanski. He can usually be found looking for kestrels on Walthamstow Marshes, in between which he is currently working on his first full-length collection of songs in Cymraeg.
